Hand Embroidery 101: An Introduction to Stitching by Hand

Hand Embroidery 101 is a beginner-friendly class designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of hand embroidery. This course is perfect for those who are new to embroidery or anyone looking to build confidence with basic stitches and materials. No prior sewing or embroidery experience is required.

In this class, students will learn how to properly set up fabric in a hoop, transfer simple designs, and select the right tools and threads for hand embroidery. We will cover several foundational stitches—such as the running stitch, backstitch, satin stitch, and French knots—and explore how they can be combined to create texture, lines, and simple decorative designs.

Through guided, hands-on practice, students will complete a small embroidered sampler or motif by the end of the class. Emphasis is placed on developing good technique, understanding stitch structure, and building comfort with the process rather than perfection.

What You’ll Learn

  • Basic embroidery tools and materials

  • How to hoop fabric and prepare your workspace

  • How to thread a needle and start/end stitches cleanly

  • Essential beginner embroidery stitches

  • Tips for practicing and continuing embroidery at home

Who This Class Is For

  • Complete beginners

  • Crafters interested in learning a new textile skill

  • Anyone looking for a relaxing, creative, hands-on experience

Materials

All materials can be provided, or students may bring their own basic embroidery supplies if preferred (details can be shared upon registration).

By the end of Hand Embroidery 101, students will leave with a finished piece, foundational knowledge of embroidery techniques, and the confidence to continue stitching on their own.

If you’d like, I can also:

  • Make it shorter and more promotional

  • Adjust it for a kids’ or teen class

  • Rewrite it in a more formal syllabus style

  • Tailor it to a specific venue (art center, library, craft store, etc.)
